This book contains assessment of the progress, or the lack of it,
in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Through review of the assessments and of case studies, readers can
draw lessons from the actions that could work to positively address
the goals. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is designed
to catalyze action in critical areas of importance to humanity and
the planet. The effort to implement the SDGs, however, demands a
sense of urgency in the face of environmental degradation, climate
change, emerging conflicts, and growing inequality, among a number
of other socio-economic problems. Five years after the launch of
the 2030 Agenda, this book takes stock of how far the world has
come and how we can position ourselves to achieve the global
targets. The book is one of the first to assess how the
implementation is impeded by the onset of COVID-19. It contains a
special chapter on COVID-19 and the SDGs, while many thematic
chapters on different SDGs also assess how COVID-19 adversely
affects implementation, and what measures could be taken to
minimize the adverse effects. This publication thus provides a
fresh look at implementation of the SDGs highlighting impactful and
creative actions that go beyond the business-as-usual development
efforts. The volume reinforces this analysis with expert
recommendations on how to support implementation efforts and
achieve the SDGs through international and national strategies and
the involvement of both the public and private sectors. The result
is an indispensable textual tool for policy makers, academia,
intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and non-governmental
organizations (NGOs), as well as the public, as we march toward the
2030 deadline.

This state-of-the-art Dictionary defines terms employed in
international agreements, national legislation and scholarly legal
studies related to comparative and international environmental law
and the emerging law of climate change. In acknowledgement of
China's growing role in this arena, each term also includes its
pinyin translation in order to facilitate access to the Mandarin
variants. The international community is developing increasingly
complex environmental provisions and participating in a number of
international treaties and agreements related to environmental law
and regulation. The complicated and highly specific nature of
environmental law has led to the development of localized
terminology that is not easily understood outside its country of
origin. Jointly prepared by scholars in China and the US, the
Dictionary provides a linguistic bridge between English and Chinese
speakers as well as an essential reference for those interpreting
and applying international environmental law, multilateral
environmental agreements, and domestic laws that implement these
treaties. Students, scholars and practitioners in the area of
environmental law will find this groundbreaking Dictionary an
invaluable addition to their libraries.

While the environmental performance of most ASEAN member states is
above the world average, ASEAN nations will continue to face
growing environmental challenges due to pressures exerted on them
such as population growth, urbanization and industrialization. The
authors of this book look at how the member states of ASEAN employ
law as a means of regional integration within the context of
environmental conservation. While the goal of new laws is to
implement sustainable development, it continues to be an ongoing
adaptive process, since clear and immediate answers to
environmental challenges are rarely available. Readers of this book
will gain a clear idea of the evolving cooperation for
sustainability within ASEAN at regional and global levels, and the
areas of focus for the future. The book will be of interest to
policy and decision makers, as well as environmental organizations
and academics in the field.
